Dozens march on Downs in solidarity

By Bristol24/7  Thursday May 28, 2015

A march took place on the Downs on Thursday evening by women who say they should feel safe in the area and not have to adapt their behavior as police have advised following a number of recent sexual assaults.

The most recent attack reported to police was just over a week ago, when a man jumped out of bushes and tried to grab a female jogger.

About 100 people joined in the march, which started from the water tower.

“We have an unfortunate tradition of focusing on how women are responsible for not getting raped instead of focusing on rapists not raping,” the organisers of the march posted to the Facebook event.

“But we also have a tradition of standing up and reclaiming our spaces!

“So on Thursday night we will we march, as so many women have done before us to say that we are NEVER to blame for rape and male violence. Those men who choose to commit these crimes are to blame.

“We will march to demand our right to live without the fear or reality of rape and male violence, we demand an end to male violence against women. We will march in solidarity with the survivors of sexual violence.”
