Cumberland Road to close for two weeks as Chocolate Path repairs continue

By Martin Booth  Thursday Sep 23, 2021

Cumberland Road will be closed to traffic for two weeks from Monday as stabilisation works continue following the partial collapse of the retaining wall into the New Cut.

The road closure will allow for piling work to take place, with access still available for businesses and residents along the road, and the pavement remaining open.

During the previous road closure in July, a row of concrete piles was completed, with smaller piles at the narrowest part of the site now due to be installed which will provide support to the Harbour Railway and Chocolate Path.

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “We recognise that this will inevitably cause some additional disruption for citizens, for which we apologise.

“We ask road users to bear with us while we complete the next phase of the vital stabilisation work on Cumberland Road, which is designed to ensure safety and prevent further disruption in the longer term.”

The collapse happened in January 2020, with the latest estimate for the reopening of the Chocolate Path and historic railway line to reopen to the public being September 2022.
