Red asphalt added to bus gate that raked in £500,000 in fines
A controversial bus gate in Bristol is now more noticeable thanks to the addition of red asphalt.
As Bristol24/7 first revealed in March, the bus gate on Cumberland Road on Spike Island raked in more than half a million pounds in fines for Bristol City Council since coming into operation at the start of 2024.
The new red asphalt is part of an attempt by the council to improve the bus gate’s visibility, despite there being more than a dozen signs on the approach to it when government regulations require only two.

The words ‘bus gate’ painted in white letters are no longer in place, with the new asphalt almost stretching as far back as Gas Ferry Road.
Cars are allowed to be driven along Cumberland Road towards the Cumberland Basin but drivers will be fined £35 – raised to £70 if not paid within 21 days – if heading the other way towards Wapping Wharf.
