Colston Hall asks Government for ?10 million
Folk musician Seth Lakeman was the star turn on Tuesday evening as the Colston Hall took its transformation campaign to Westminster, calling on the Government to match the £10m proposed by Bristol City Council to help secure the historic venue’s future.
Politicians and music industry figures met at the House of Commons to join representatives from Bristol Music Trust.
Bristol MPs from all three political parties are backing the campaign, with speeches at the event from Stephen Williams, Dawn Primarolo and Charlotte Leslie.
Bristol Music Trust’s £45m campaign hopes not just to transform the Victorian building but also make Bristol “the UK Capital for Young People’s Music”, enhancing what is already the only music education hub in the country to be located in a professional performance venue.
Trust chief executive Louise Mitchell said: “We’ve brought our campaign to the House of Commons to beat the drum for Bristol, and the potential we have to really make a difference within the city and beyond.
“Colston Hall has a unique opportunity to become a leader in our role as a music education hub. We already reach thousands of young people each year and this programme will ensure we go even further to inspire and engage with future generations.”
