Children provide new safety announcements at railway stations

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Feb 12, 2019

Safety announcements recorded by pupils from Victoria Park Primary School will soon be heard at Bristol Temple Meads and Bristol Parkway.

The Year 5 and 6 students were given a masterclass in voice coaching by BBC Radio Bristol breakfast show presenter Emma Britton before recording the variety of messages in a temporary studio inside Temple Meads.

GWR bosses hope that the messages such as advising passengers to take care on the stairs and not run on platforms will reduce the number of slips, trips and falls.

Temple Meads GWR station ambassador Jake Falcon said: “The confidence shown by the students when recording the announcements was incredible. Some were so enthusiastic they had a go at making some live announcements which certainly attracted attention.”

Victoria Park Primary School learning mentor Sean Brice added: “We are really excited to be involved in this project with GWR and our local Community Railway Partnership (Severnside Community Rail Partnership).

“Creating station announcements is an amazing opportunity for the children to take part in a fun community project and find out how things work in the world around them.”

If the trial is successful, GWR will consider adopting the idea at other stations across the network.
