Building work to start on one of last vacant dockside sites

By Martin Booth  Friday May 7, 2021

Work is due to start soon on a site close to the SS Great Britain that has been unused for two decades.

A now-demolished warehouse on Gas Ferry Road had been the headquarters of metal merchant McArthur’s Group but has remained empty since Artspace left in the early 1990s.

The new McArthur’s Yard development will contain142 one-, two- and three-bedroom flats as well as commercial space on the ground floor.

Hill Group has been handed possession of the site with construction work set to begin in early summer.

The site sits opposite the SS Great Britain car park (also earmarked for development) and is bordered by the footpath connecting Gas Ferry Lane to Hannover Place.

Catriona Simons, chief executive of the Guinness Partnership, who have owned the site since 2018, said: “We are delighted to be starting construction works at our McArthur’s Yard site in Bristol.

“This development, which brings a long-derelict site back into use, will provide much needed, high-quality homes, and is part of our long-term commitment to building new homes and creating communities in Bristol, and across the country.”

Andy Hill, chief executive of main contractor Hill Group, added: “We are looking forward to creating a community that will breathe new life into a historic harbourside site that has been redundant for over 20 years.”
