Bristol witness tells of Tunisia horror

By Louis Emanuel  Friday Jun 26, 2015

A Bristol tourist has described the scene of a deadly gun attack on a beach in Tunisia where at least 28 people have been killed.

Gary Pine, 47, from Siston Common, told Bristol24/7: “We were sitting on the beach about 100 yards away from where it happened. It sounded like firecrackers and then we thought there was a huge gun fight going on.

“We realised bullets were flying around, passed our ears, and I screamed to my son to get out of the water.

“People moved slowly at first away from the beach into the hotels and then it was just panic as everyone realised what was happening.”

Sunbathers by two hotels in Sousse, Tunisia, were attacked at about 12pm on Friday by a man alleged to have hidden his Kalshankaov machine gun under a parasol.

Pine said that tourists at the five-star El Mouradi Palm Marina hotel, where he and his family have been staying for a week, were now safe inside.

One gunman has shot dead, according to authorities. Another has been detained, according to local reports.

The victims of the attack are thought to be predominantly German and British tourists staying at hotels on the seafront.

Tunisia has been on high alert since March when 22 tourists were killed my militants at a museum in the capital Tunis.
