Bristol student becomes world squash no. 1

By Pamela Parkes  Tuesday Oct 21, 2014

A Bristol student has crushed the competition to become the number one squash player in the world.

Mohamed Elshorbagy, who is studying for a MSc in Finance at UWE, has topped the Professional Squash Association’s (PSA) World Rankings, following his victory at the 2014 Delaware Investments US Open in Philadelphia.

Mohamed beat fellow Egyptian, and four-time World Champion, Amr Shabana to take the top spot in the sport for the first time.

He said: “Becoming world number one is such an unbelievable feeling. I have been very lucky to have such a great team working behind me at UWE Bristol over the past five years; the support I have received has been second-to-none.”

Alex Isaac, Head of Sport at UWE said: “Huge congratulations to Mohamed, we are very proud of this fantastic achievement. We wish him the best of luck in the next leg of the PSA World Series Championship.”
