Bristol East: 2017 General Election result

By Bristol24/7  Friday Jun 9, 2017

Kerry McCarthy increased her share of the vote by more than 20 per cent as she retained her Bristol East seat.

The constituency was high up the list of Tory targets, but Theo Clarke’s challenge failed to materialise.

McCarthy said: “It felt like it was a positive campaign. I’m a bit overwhelmed by it. I’m really surprised by the national picture.

“Theresa May called the election because she expected a landslide and they threw the campaign away. I think there was a certain amount of arrogance. There was just a lot of people worried about the Tory cuts.”

Clarke said: “First of all I would like to congratulate Kerry and thank all of my volunteers . I’m extremely pleased that the Tories’ vote has gone up by several thousand since 2015. We have had a very good swing.”
