Bristol charity launches 20,000-step challenge to tackle homelessness

By Milan Perera  Thursday Mar 12, 2026

A Bristol charity is calling on the public to lace up their walking shoes and help raise funds to support people experiencing homelessness across the city.

Caring in Bristol has announced the Bristol Cares Challenge 2026, inviting people to walk 20,000 steps on either March 27 or March 28.

The step target reflects the more than 20,000 people currently waiting for social housing in Bristol.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Organisers say the challenge is designed to raise awareness of housing insecurity in the city while generating vital funds to support the charity’s work.

People can take part individually or form teams with friends, family or colleagues

Caring in Bristol provides emergency support, housing advice and longer-term assistance aimed at helping people move out of crisis and towards stable housing.

Money raised through the challenge will help fund these services.

Casey Cox, corporate and community partnerships coordinator at Caring in Bristol, said: “Small actions, when done together, can create powerful change. Every step taken and every pound raised brings us closer to a Bristol where everyone has a place to call home.”

Participants can complete the 20,000 steps in one go or spread them throughout the day.

Walkers are free to choose their own route, whether that is around the city, through local parks or even on a treadmill.

People can take part individually or form teams with friends, family or colleagues.

Those signing up will receive a fundraising pack with guidance and sponsorship materials, and participants who complete the challenge will be awarded a certificate.

Organisers are encouraging walkers to share their progress online using the hashtag #BristolCaresChallenge, helping spread the message that Bristol residents are stepping up to support those facing homelessness.
