Barbecue causes fire on Downs

By Martin Booth  Monday Jul 14, 2025

Fire crews raced to the Downs to put out a fire on dry grass that had been caused by a disposable barbecue.

The fire took hold next to Circular Road near the Sea Walls, with smoke rising into the air.

It is not the first time that a barbecue has led to a fire breaking out on the Downs, with their use banned in most parks across Bristol but still enjoyed and often leaving behind scorch marks on the ground.

In a warning on their website on how to barbecue safely, Avon Fire & Rescue Service say barbecues “are a fun way to cook outside but they can easily become dangerous”.

In a video from @mark_uk_bristol on TikTok uploaded on Sunday just as a fire engine arrives on the scene, someone can be heard saying: “I’m just up on Clifton Downs and someone thought having a barbecue in 34-degree weather would be a great idea…

“It was literally a tiny little barbecue. They tried to put it out with the bottles of water which they had to no avail and unfortunately set fire to all the grass.”
