Unprovoked racist attack with bike lock leaves man unconscious
A man was knocked unconscious after being repeatedly hit around the head with a bike lock in a racially motivated assault.
Police have described the level of violence used in the unprovoked attack in Bristol city centre as shocking and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
The incident happened at around 8pm last on Tuesday, July 4 on a Bond Street South traffic island between Phoenix Court and Cabot Circus, when a man riding a bicycle started racially abusing three friends, before going on to attack one of the group with the makeshift weapon.
The victim, a 31-year-old man, was hit around the head several times before he lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital and required stitches for a facial injury sustained in the attack.
The offender is described as a white man, around 5′ 6″ tall and in his 30s or 40s.
Investigating officer PC Isaac Barnett said: “This was a vicious unprovoked attack on an innocent man in a busy area in broad daylight.
“The level of violence used was shocking, while the words used by the offender prior to this incident clearly indicate it was racially motivated.
“We’re taking it extremely seriously and are keen to hear from anyone who witnessed anything or who has any other information which could help our inquiry.”
