Animal rights activists stage vigil outside warehouse
Trucks filled with pigs ground to halt as they approached the Pilgrim’s Europe warehouse in Westerleigh on Monday as dozens of animal rights activists made their approach.
The activists were there to ‘bear witness’ to the pigs before they were taken inside.
Pilgrim’s is a food and agricultural business with warehouses in the UK, Ireland, France and the Netherlands which specialise in pig and lamb farming, among others.

They claim to be the ‘largest producer of higher welfare pork in the UK’.
The activists, who went up to the warehouse on Monday, are one of several Animal Save Movement groups who are organising vigils across the world throughout March to raise attention to the suffering of animals in the meat industry.
The Animal Save Movement was founded in Canada in 2010 and now has over 300 chapters in more than 30 countries. Their primary form of activism is holding vigils outside abattoirs.

Dozens of activists from the Animal Save Movement attended the vigil on Monday
Andrew Garner, a spokesperson for Animal Save UK, attended the Bristol vigil on Monday.
He said: “Witnessing pigs in their final moments before being sent to slaughter is a life-changing experience. It opens your eyes to the cruelty hidden behind closed doors and compels you to take action against this injustice.
“The meat, dairy, and egg industries are concealing the harsh realities from the public. If slaughterhouses were exposed for all to see, they would cease to exist.”
