A different kind of migrant is changing the face of Bristol

By Bristol24/7  Tuesday Oct 25, 2016

Bristol is the most popular city for people already living in the UK to move to, according to new research conducted over the last five years.

Almost 15,000 ‘internal migrants’ came to live in Bristol from across the country, helping it become the fastest growing city, in terms of population, outside of London.

Greater Bristol’s population grew by 1.4 per cent when measuring internal migration alone – outstripping Edinburgh in second place, with 0.8 per cent. London lost 3.1 percent of its population to internal emigration to other parts of the UK.

Overall, Greater Bristol’s population grew by 4.5 per cent to 1,070,000 between 2011 to 2015, according to the data released by the Office for National Statistics. This was helped by net international migration of 1.4 percent and a high birthrate.

The research notes that Bristol tends to retain graduates who come to study here. It adds: “One Greater London phenomenon is the high number of 0- to 18-year-olds moving out. A likely factor is that the parents of these children are leaving the city to find more affordable accommodation for their growing family.”

Bristol has the fastest growing economy outside of London.
