24-hour ‘grapplethon’ to raise funds for defibrillator in community

By Charlie Watts  Thursday Oct 13, 2022

A 24-hour “grapplethon” is set to take place to raise funds to install a defibrillator in a community.

Martial arts club Aftermath BJJ Knowle is behind the event, which will see them grapple non-stop from midday on Saturday to midday on Sunday.

Nick Jordan, instructor of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club on Filwood Broadway in Knowle West, has created a GoFundMe to raise £2,000 for the life-saving device.

Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

He hopes to put the machine – which will become the only 24-hour, public defibrillator in Knowle West – outside his club.

“The grapplethon is to bring the community together in a way that we can raise money for a really good cause,” says Nick.

“I think a defibrillator is something that we should have in this area. It’s a lifesaving tool and we should have had it ages ago. Just two weeks ago, someone in the area was having heart palpations and needed one.”

Aftermath opened in a former cafe on Filwood Broadway, in April, under its previous name, Gracie Barra Knowle.

The club, which started in 2016 and was based at Filwood Community Centre before moving to its current venue, is open seven days a week.

As well as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes for adults and children, it also runs classes in wrestling and yoga.

During the grapplethon from Saturday to Sunday, there will also be teas and coffees for those that visit and a bucket to collect donations.
