The remarkable story of Bristol’s Easter Garden

By Martin Booth  Saturday Apr 16, 2022

On the afternoon of April 24, a party at Easter Garden will feature drinks from Susan’s Coffee Cart, homemade cakes, jams and preserves for sale, as well as a raffle.

There will of course also be reminisces about this fascinating corner of Bristol, with a former piece of derelict land where two ruined cottages had stood now transformed into the tranquil garden it is today.

The story of Easter Garden includes a developer enclosing land he did not own, local people tearing down fences, a stand-off involving the police, the poisoning of plants, the cutting down of trees and even a JCB being driven through the bottom wall.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

A committed group of volunteers now looks after garden, located in Clifton between Wesley Place and High Street; close to the Port of Call pub.

In 1999, the public footpath through the land was officially registered on Ordinance Survey maps; and in 2014 the garden was granted to the Friends of Easter Garden for perpetuity.
