Volunteering: a new year’s resolution?
Bristol Cities of Service is all about getting active in your community. Here are three ways you could get involved in 2016.
Could you help children with reading in school?

At present we are working hard to make sure that all Bristol’s children get the best possible start at primary school.
Research shows that children who have fallen behind with their reading by the age of eleven are very likely fall further behind at secondary school, and ultimately to struggle throughout their lives. Let’s make sure this doesn’t happen to our children!
To volunteer to read with six and seven year olds in a school near you would involve a daytime commitment of one hour per week (plus travel time to and from the school) during term time. Training and expenses are provided.

Or how about running a Coding Club at a local Primary School?
Bristol is rapidly emerging as one of the best places for tech companies in Europe – this means more jobs in the future and we want to see ALL our young people getting an opportunity to get a job in this growing industry.
To volunteer to help children learn about computer programming and coding in a local school, involves working with our partners Code Club to set up an after school club. If you work as a programmer/coder or are just an enthusiast, here’s a chance to inspire the next generation of coders!

Or perhaps you would like to help us grow a forest in Bristol?

One Tree per Child is looking to plant a tree for every child in primary school in Bristol. It’s often said that children are our future, well now’s your chance to leave a lasting legacy for the children of Bristol by helping them to plant 36,000 trees this winter and spring.
As well as tree planters we are looking to recruit volunteers to become Tree Wardens and look after the saplings in the first few years after they have been planted.
This opportunity is particularly suitable for retired people with an interest in gardening.
Interested? Then email your name and contact telephone number to [email protected] with the words ‘Tree Warden’ in the subject line giving a brief explanation as to why you want to be involved. All applications will be considered.
