Shop of the Week: Wuppie’s Raw Pet Supplies, Bishopsworth
In mid-December lifelong dog-lover Brad and his wife Sally opened Wuppie’s Raw Pet Supplies, a Bishopsworth pet store specialising in raw dog food.
“It’s kind of like a dog deli,” says Brad.
Brad, who lives locally, remembered how difficult it was finding raw food for his own dog, resorting to ordering it online and getting it shipped specially for him.

But that came with logistical challenges he discovered, as often customers would not be home to receive the delivery, resulting in the fresh dog food, defrosting into a less-than-appetising congealed mess by the time they arrived back.
“That’s why we’ve opened up a little shop this side of town, so local people can come in and get their food more conveniently.”

Brad explains that raw food “offers dogs a more balanced diet” compared to wet and dry dog food from a tin or bag, which can often disrupt a dogs digestion if the ingredients aren’t good quality.
Raw food he says is normally 80 per cent muscle meat, 10 percent organ tissue and 10 per cent bone material it has a high nutritional value.
The shop sells a range of products from buffalo ears to canine shampoo.
Their raw meat products are the best-sellers, with the shop going through 500 kilos week.
Wrapped and displayed in a freezer, you would be forgiven for thinking they were stacked deli meat.

Rabbit ears are a particular hit he claims “since anything with fur acts as a natural dewormer.”
Now entering its fifth month, the shop has proved popular with locals. Brad and Sally have gradually built up a customer base and are always happy to see repeat customers.
They’ve also befriended their next door neighbour K9 Cuts, whose customers often pop in for a treat after a dog grooming session.
Sadly I had just missed an enormous, dribbly and very friendly Great Dane.
“I love it when people come in with their dogs, especially old English bulldogs,” adds Sally.

Wuppie the Puppy was Brad’s nickname for his own English bulldog who passed away almost two years ago.
His picture hangs on the wall and is one of the very first things you notice walking into the shop.
In the future Brad wants to expand the store and hire more staff. For the moment, he’s planning to make the most of the good weather and order in some dog ice cream.
The phrase ‘my dog eats better than me,’ really could be true if you shop here.
