By Milan Perera  Tuesday Aug 19, 2025

A global fashion giant with a famous sporting pedigree will be opening its first store in Bristol.

Uniqlo — the Japanese retailer once fronted by the tennis ace Novak Djokovic — will soon open its first city store in Cabot Circus.

The Japanese fashion retailer with around 2,500 outlets worldwide, will move into the former Topshop unit on Brigstowe Street.

The new Bristol outlet will also be Uniqlo’s first store in the South West, marking a significant milestone for the fashion brand as it expands its footprint across the UK.

Topshop and Topman, previously located at 25 Brigstowe Street, was closed down in 2021.

According to a planning application submitted to Bristol City Council, permission has been requested for the installation of illuminated signage in the brand’s trademark red-and-white colours.

Founded in 1984, Uniqlo has grown into a global fashion powerhouse. The brand sponsored Novak Djokovic from 2012 to 2017, a partnership that helped cement its international profile.

The parent group, Fast Retailing, employs around 130,000 people worldwide, with Uniqlo itself accounting for about 30,000 staff across its 2,500 stores.

Specialising in leisurewear and casualwear for men, women and children, the retailer is known for its extensive range.

The Bristol branch will join a cluster of high-street names in Cabot Circus, including H&M, Zara, Damaged Society and Harvey Nichols.

Uniqlo expects to have 23 stores across the UK by the end of the year, with new outlets expected to open in Birmingham and Glasgow.
