Urban Kohinoor – restaurant review
Urban Tandoor has racked up an envious awards cabinet since opening on Small Street in 2014, and now owners Sujith D’almeida and Dhanasekaran Durai have opened their second restaurant hoping to repeat this winning formula.
Also specialising in Indian dining, Urban Kohinoor on Blackboy Hill in Clifton boasts an extensive menu and a lavishly decorated interior.
All wearing “Keep Calm and Curry On” aprons, the waiting staff were extremely attentive on a recent Tuesday evening, perhaps even over-attentive as we were checked on half a dozen times while eating.
What also got annoying rather quickly was the ‘soothing’ music on a loop.
But the food itself was divine and it’s clear that the award-winning ways of their sister restaurant in the Old City have been transferred to this new opening at the top of Whiteladies Road.
Poppadoms and dips
Before we even considered our main course options, we were offered complimentary poppadoms with a selection of very tasty dips and dressings.
For the main course, a chicken tikka masala (£9.95) was creamy and full to the brim with flavour. The chicken mixed in with the sauce was tender and succulent, well infused with the flavours from the sauce, and served with pilau rice (£2.95) and a garlic naan (£3.10).

Across the other side of the table, my dining companion ordered a half tandoori chicken (£8.95) and a plain naan (£2.75).
The servings were generous which certainly made it feel like value for money, and I can safely declare the chicken tikka masala as the best I have ever tasted in Bristol.
The warming comfort of the curries was well needed on a cold and wet evening. And with the outstanding service matched with the delicious food, the team at Urban Kohinoor look well set to replicate their city centre success.
