Pub of the week: The Duke of York

By Martin Booth  Tuesday Sep 23, 2014

Pubs with large outside seating areas are somewhat of a rarity in many of parts of Bristol.

Not so at the top of the Gloucester Road in Horfield at the Duke of York, which has had a lick of paint and a change back to its original name from its days as the rather down at heel Gloucester Arms.

There is a paved area at the front and a garden around the side so large that it will always catch the sun.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

The new licensees here have come from Basingstoke after stints around the country including the Warwick Arms in Clutton, now a Mezze.

They have taken on an imposing detached Victorian building, opposite Horfield Common and within stumbling distance of Horfield Leisure Centre for anybody who wants to cancel out their workout with a pint.

Out of a possible choice of three, the only ale when I visited on a Thursday afternoon was Doom Bar. Lager is the drink of choice here, with Thatcher’s Gold the one cider on draught.

The food menu is basic pub fare – sandwiches, burgers, mixed grill and the like – with nothing costing more than a tenner.

I played safe and opted for a jacket potato with tuna mayonnaise. At £4.50 served with salad and coleslaw, it was good value but tasted like it had been reheated from frozen and had a skin that needed cutting with a chainsaw.
