A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Red Monkey, Redland

By Martin Booth  Sunday Feb 11, 2024

A few passers-by peered through the windows of the Red Monkey as they walked down Chandos Road on a recent Sunday afternoon.

It often isn’t abundantly clear that this pub is open but within these walls there are regular live music nights, pub quizzes and a 4.5kg bar of Toblerone currently able to be won in a charity raffle.

The Red Monkey was the site of one of Bristol’s first micropubs when it was opened as Chums by jovial Irish landlord Mark Farrell in 2016. Mark sadly died in 2022 and his obituary in Pints West magazine is framed on one side of the bar.

The cask beer is available to buy here by the pint or by the jug, with the prices based on ABV: £4.40 for a pint 4.4% or less, up to £5 for something between 5.5% and 5.9% or £18.40 for a jug.

On tap at the moment are Wye Valley’s Butty Bach and HPA, Gun Dog from Teignworthy, and Infinity from Blue Monkey.

“The usual, sir?” one local was asked as he walked in carrying heavy shopping bags in both hands. “Yes please.”

“You’re very sensible, that’s what I should have had,” another regular told a newcomer to the pub who had just ordered a bottle of Bristol Beer Factory’s Clear Head.

Four different beers from Ashley Down Brewery are due to be coming soon but it’s not just beer here, with four different wines also available.

Gourmet pickled eggs – traditional, cider and chilli, and mulled cider – from GingerBeard’s Preserves are in three glass jars on the bar costing £2 each.

With Chandos Road being one of Bristol’s best thoroughfares for food (Wilsons is next door and Little Hollows next to that), the food selection here isn’t shy at proclaiming its virtues with a blackboard promising the best cheese and onion rolls this side of Cheddar, the best pork pies this side of Wigan and the finest pub snacks east of the Tannhäuser Gate.
