A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Luckwell, Bedminster
As far as football loyalties go, The Luckwell in Bedminster could not be any clearer.
It would be a challenge to spot a glimpse of blue inside this unofficial shrine to Bristol City, just a short walk down from Ashton Gate.
On a sunny afternoon, a patron stops by for a quick pint. The outdoor seating is bathed in the luxurious spring sunshine, though there might still be a bite in the air despite the blazing sun.
is needed now More than ever
As one of the oldest pubs in Bedminster, with origins dating back to 1885, The Luckwell has many stories to tell.
Some of these stories are carefully documented behind glass frames, showcasing a plethora of signed Bristol City shirts through the years.

The Luckwell’s drink selection is unpretentious with familiar choices
The spacious bar area is designed to accommodate a large number of patrons, making it ideal for a pre-match drink.
The pool table on the right and the fruit machine at the back embody the classic sporting pub theme. The drink selection is unpretentious, with familiar choices, and the patron settles for a John Smith’s.
There are only three people inside, all still in their overalls, caked in paint, catching up on the day’s work. Their voices rise in expletive-laden chatter, but never directed outside the group.
The old pub was given a facelift around four years ago and was reopened by one of Bristol City’s famous sons, Tommy Doherty.

A big screen at the back is perfect for catching up on the latest Sky Sports offerings while sipping a pint. The evening is still young, and a string of patrons make their way to the bar. Some decide to sit outside, basking in the sun despite the cool breeze.
Is this the best football-themed pub in Bristol? It is definitely one of the best.
