Plant-based cafe to close

By Martin Booth  Monday Jul 3, 2023

A cafe owner has slammed the Tory government “for ruining the economy, forcing us small businesses into near bankruptcy and also for being total racist, transphobic, elitist, selfish environment-destroying tw4ts”.

Babs Greaves opened Eat Your Greens in Totterdown in 2018 but says that the cafe’s final brunch services will be on Friday and Saturday.

The chef said that Sunday roasts and some special supper clubs and events at the vegan cafe on Wells Road will still happen in August but “then I think that will be it, folks”.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Writing on Instagram, Babs said: “EYG has absorbed the rising costs of the last year for too long now (our profit margin was already minimal before this cost of living crisis all kicked off) and after a few very, VERY quiet months of brunch service, the business just can’t take the financial hit anymore. We can’t afford to be empty.

“Perspective: I’ve not paid myself for 2 months, and I have used all of my savings. Wah! Don’t worry though, I paid my staff of course. I have anguished over trying to make things work and change the business model but it just doesn’t work with the costs of running a premises and all the price hikes, and I don’t want to price people out by charging a shed load.

“I will post more about what’s going to happen next at a later date – but for now, I just want to say thank you to each and every one of you who has supported us over the last FIVE YEARS! I bloody love you all and will miss you incredibly. Babs xx”

Babs added: “Oh yes, may I just take this opportunity and platform to say #FUCKTHETORIES for ruining the economy, forcing us small businesses into near bankruptcy and also for being total racist, transphobic, elitist, selfish environment-destroying tw4ts.

“Now there, whoah, it goes without saying, but if anyone is tempted to leave ‘constructive’ comments about ‘well if you were open more’ or ‘why don’t you try…’ or ‘have you thought about…’ or comments about how you would have run the business differently etc, please don’t. Really. Don’t. It hurts.”
