The Lion pub to roar again under experienced new landlords
The team behind one of Bristol’s most picturesque pubs is taking on a second watering hole in the city.
Adrian Youdell and Richard Avison of the Hope & Anchor on Jacob’s Wells Road are heading further up the hill to the Lion in Cliftonwood.
The Lion on Church Lane had been closed for almost a year until it was reopened by new custodians in April but they did not last long.
is needed now More than ever
“Our plan is to start taking on beautiful pubs across Bristol and the Lion is our second venture,” Avison told Bristol24/7.
The plan is to have the Lion roaring again from September 23, ahead of which there will be a small refurbishment inside and a complete transformation of the small outside area to match the “tropical garden vibe” of the Hope & Anchor.

Avison added that he wants to bring the Lion “back on the pub scene”, with a weekly pub quiz already planned for every Wednesday.
He promises “decent beer, a large section of wines from around the world, local spirits including gin and vodka, but also have a lovely selection of other spirits and drinks”.
Future food plans include small plates during the week, “a decent Sunday roast offering” and possibly also brunch served at weekends.
Avison added: “As it’s also new to us, we will be asking the locals what they would like us to be doing and how we can be part of the community in Hotwells and Cliftonwood.”
