18th century former coaching inn for sale

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Sep 11, 2024

A pub dating back to 1752 that was once a coaching inn on the road from Bristol to Wales is for sale.

The White Bear at the top of St Michael’s Hill is on the market with an asking price of £840,000, which includes the pub and a three-bedroom flat on the second floor.

In more recent times, the pub was the original venue of the Wardrobe Theatre from 2011 to 2014 before the venue moved to the Old Market Assembly.

The Kingsdown pub is popular with students due to its proximity to the University of Bristol campus, with a weekly pub quiz hosted by the UoB Quiz Society.

The space formerly used by the Wardrobe Theatre is now the Room Above comedy club, with the pub also hosting painting parties and pop-up kitchen residencies.

Savills are listing the White Bear as “a freehold public house investment for sale let until August 2042 at a rent of £64,827 per annum”.
