Spike Island Cafe aims for ambitious changes

By Alison Maney  Wednesday Mar 16, 2016

Now under new owners, the Spike Island Cafe is determined to show the softer side of cutting edge art.

The cafe, which is located at the Spike Island contemporary art centre and former Brooke Bond tea packing factory, has begun its transformation with a new crowdfunding campaign.

As part of the #BetterBristol campaign, the venue hopes to raise at least £9,000 to create a “warmer” atmosphere – think plants, wood, gentle lighting, soft chairs and shelves of books on art and food.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

This will replace the current design, which is meant to emulate an old worker’s canteen.

However, don’t think the cafe’s becoming old-fashioned – the venue will keep the “clean modern feel” of a contemporary art gallery.

Donors to the Spike Island Cafe’s crowdfunding page can choose from  a variety of rewards, such as bottomless coffee for a year, an uphostery course and a three-hour cooking masterclass.
