Taking centre stage: Dom Porter on stepping out of the shadows

By Issy Packer  Tuesday Oct 24, 2023

Northern-born but now based in St Pauls, Dom Porter is an artist-producer whose debut EP, Psyche, is out on October 27.

Self-described as “melancholic-euphoric”, Dom’s has extensive background working with other artists behind the scenes before deciding to branch out on his own.

“I was working in genres that I just wasn’t passionate about and didn’t feel like they ever truly spoke to me,” Dom tells Bristol24/7.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

“It took a lot for me to say goodbye to that side of my work though, I lost a lot. Lockdown really was the catalyst as I had so much time to myself and I couldn’t collaborate in the way that I wanted so it forced my hand to look inwards at some of the things I was neglecting about myself.”

The artists previous singles, Fallen and Arches, have received a warm reception with Arches being BBC Music Introducing’s showcase track of the week.

“The amount of messages and support I’ve received has honestly been mind blowing. This is the first time I’ve had the courage to release music that is purely my own, which throughout the whole process has been super vulnerable!”

Dom’s debut EP, Psyhe, is due later this month with the project being heavily influenced by the soundtrack he grew up listening to: “Nostalgia has always been something that fascinated me and looking back through my Dad’s old music he used to show me as a kid felt like the perfect place to start.”

The six track EP has been split into two subjects: tension and release and while this wasn’t something that was planned, Dom realised there was a pattern that emerged while creating and producing the release.

“Throughout this last year whilst writing for the project, I’ve had extreme lows but they have always led to extreme highs,” Dom explains.

“Life has a way of counterbalancing itself through cycles and I think subconsciously that came through in what I chose to write about.”

The EP promises to be a self-reflective, vulnerable and introspective body of work and, if the previous releases are anything to go by, a beautiful addition to the city’s music scene.

Dom’s debut headline show will take place on December 7 at Dareshack; tickets will go on sale soon at Headfirst.
