Review: Motorhead at Eden Sessions, Cornwall
King Creature, took to the Sessions stage first, whipping the crowd into a frenzy with their raw, authentic thrash metal – a local band worthy of the accolade of having supported the mighty Motörhead.
Next on stage were special guests, The Stranglers. One of the longest surviving acts of the punk era; The Stranglers have a reputation one of the finest live groups in the country. Seems they’ve definitely earned it. Opening with Golden Brown, filling the biomes with their distinctive sound that spans progressive rock, metal, pop and jazz, they set the tone for their spectacular set.
The band congratulated the elated crowd on choosing Eden Sessions over Glastonbury, which went down a treat. Highlights included Peaches, No More Heros and Nice ‘N’ Sleazy – the bassline on which is just unbelievable and really set the standard for the headliners.
This Eden Session was Motörhead’s first gig in Cornwall since 1983 and the crowd were ready. Lemmy’s: “We are Motörhead and we play rock ‘n’ roll” was met with an enthusiastic roar from fans young and old. There’s no easing you in with Motörhead, the band who’ve earned their reputation as “world’s loudest rock band” lurch straight in with their epic ear-drum perforating genre-defying fusion of rock, punk and metal.
Motörhead are a genuine British rock ‘n’ roll band that require as little introduction as much-loved hell raiser and front man, Lemmy. Sure, they’re Grammy-winners and have sold more than 20 million records world wide, but to see them live is to appreciate that that they’re not just churning out the same old songs (as Aftershock proves), they’re living them – as loud as they can.
Ace of Spades, arguably the band’s best-known track, sent the biome into rapture. Dr Rock, Orgasmatron and The Chase Is Better Than The Catch were also real highlights. Mikkey Dee, introduced by Lemmy, quite rightly, as “the best drummer in the world” had the crowd transfixed with his solo spot that added a powerful extra element to the show. Motörhead finished on a real high with the fury of Overkill and marks a complete success for the Eden Project’s first-ever hard rock Session.
