Review; Baby Queen, Trinity – ‘Full of energy’

By Kyran Wood  Wednesday Nov 15, 2023

Trinity came alive last night with this sold-out performance by Baby Queen with support from Viji.

Born in South Africa, Baby Queen moved to London at the age of 18 to pursue a career in music.

Baby Queen has seen recent fame as one of the main artists featured on the Heartstopper soundtrack, a popular coming-of-age teen drama on Netflix.

Starting with an EP and a mixtape, this tour is in support of her debut album Quarter Life Crisis.

Viji was up first, bringing a refreshing revival of the pop-punk sound and aesthetic of the early 2000s.

Sometimes soft, sometimes heavy, but with a distinct vibe that perfectly complemented the music of Baby Queen.

Baby Queen hit the stage full of energy, diving into the title track of the new album with gusto.

While the recorded tracks are a mix of alt and synth-pop, the live show brought more of a rock energy to them. Her band managed to match her stage presence perfectly while showing a lot of skill in their various instruments.

I was impressed with the staging, which can occasionally be ignored by artists on tour for a more stark setup. There was a large background image covering the back wall split in two, half a child’s bedroom and half more adult.

It was a great personification of the quarter-life crisis the album discusses, partly trapped between being an adult and still feeling like a child.

While a lot of the tracks had more obvious messages such as Die Alone and Love Killer, I appreciated that she took the time to talk through the messages of some of them, which I thought helped us as an audience connect to them.

The slower, more personal tracks really shone because of this, expertly interspersed between some of the faster, crowd-pleasers.

Baby Queen seems to have a bright future ahead if this sold-out show is anything to go by!
