Preview: Afriquoi, The Lantern – ‘Genre-bending and timeless music’

By Ursula Billington  Friday Dec 13, 2024

The Lantern is set to light up on Friday with the electric sounds of live dance music augmented with Congolese guitar and Gambian kora.

Five-piece Afriquoi fuse African music with live percussion and electronica, drawing on house, garage, disco, soul and jungle beats to create a unique, supercharged dance fusion that moves body and soul.

With members ranging across three decades in age, each one a band leader in their own right, the Afro-supergroup showcase their depth of musical knowledge, culture and life experience, embodying it with with explosive energy and a fresh take that has opened traditional sounds up to a new generation.

EatDrink24/7 Launch Party is back on July 8 2026!
Exclusive collabs from Bristol’s favourite food vendors, available for one night only. Be first to grab your free copy of the EatDrink24/7 guide – plus every ticket comes with a free limited-edition beer can.

Their Afro-house classic Kudaushe has become an established favourite in clubs all over the world, and they have toured all over Europe, as well as performing at major festivals including Glastonbury, WOMAD, Dimensions, Fusion, Boomtown, Shambala , Bestival, Secret Garden Party and the London 2012 Olympics.

Support comes from British-Congolese artist Liz Ikamba, serving up a loop-layered, beats-heavy melting pot of sounds from across the diaspora, from Congo folk music and traditional African rhythms to dub, jazz, soul and hip hop.

Ikamba sings in both English and Lingala, telling a personal and ancestral story that touches on universal themes of connection and yearning, taking audiences on a voyage between the Democratic Republic of Congo and the UK. She breaks down borders to create a shared feeling of belonging and community through sound.
