Nick Broomfield Heads West
It’s been 12 years since Ghosts and Sarah Palin: You Betcha director Nick Broomfield‘s last serial killer documentary, Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer. His oddly titled new one, Tales of the Grim Sleeper, is an account of the psycho who terrorised South Central Los Angeles for a quarter of a century. It is now believed that he may have claimed as many as 100 victims.
The Grim Sleeper nickname arose because the perp took a 14 year break from killing black women, who were mostly crack addicts and prostitutes. Suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr is currently awaiting trial. Broomfield places himself centre stage, as usual, but this is as much about race, poverty and police indifference as it is about the crimes. The director will be at the Watershed to talk about his film on Wed 4 Feb. Tickets are available here.
