Bristol Surf Cinema returns with screenings of award-winning surf tourism film
Bristol Surf Cinema returns with screenings of powerful, award-winning surf tourism documentary by Rebecca Coley.
After a successful debut in April with nearly 250 attendees and raising more than £300 for The Wave Project, Bristol Surf Cinema is back this July for another unique screening event.
This time they will be diving into the powerful story of surf tourism, cultural change and environmental impact.
is needed now More than ever
Bristol Surf Cinema’s next screening brings Rebecca Coley’s acclaimed documentary Point of Change to the big screen.
Award-winning director Rebecca tells the story of Nias, an island off the coast of Indonesia, and how its ‘discovery’ as a world-class surf destination in the 1970s changed life for the local community dramatically.

Point of Change explores the complex impacts of surf tourism – on people, place and culture – in a way that speaks to surfers, ocean enthusiasts, documentary fans, climate activists and social change makers alike.
This event is more than a film screening. Bristol Surf Cinema is creating a platform for meaningful surf stories that prioritise diversity, representation and independent filmmaking.
The first event in April connected over 200 surf and ocean lovers in Bristol and laid the foundations for a growing community.

The July screening features:
- A Q&A with director Rebecca Coley
- A curated selection of UK-made surf short films, including Surfaced by Paul Stevenson and Seb: A Surf Therapy Journey by Matilda Thompson
- £1 from every ticket sold is donated to The Wave Project, supporting surf therapy initiatives for young people across the UK
Theo Cockrean, founder of Bristol Surf Cinema, says: “I wanted to build something that supports independent surf filmmaking and brings people together around stories that really matter.
“Surf films don’t just have to be edits — they can explore identity, culture, and how our love of the ocean connects us all.”
Showings are limited: Saturday 12 July & Wednesday July 16, with tickets available now via the Watershed website.
