Bristol film studio named as most sustainable in the world

By Martin Booth  Monday Apr 14, 2025

The Bottle Yard Studios’ TBY2 facility has been named by the leading authority on environmental sustainability in the screen industries as the most sustainable film and TV studio in the world.

The 2025/26 Studio Sustainability Standard Report from BAFTA albert places the south Bristol facility as the highest performing studio of the year.

The Bristol City Council-owned TBY2 in Hengrove is rated ‘outstanding’ with an overall score of 97 per cent, the highest of 31 global studios.

Sustainable features at TBY2 include a building management system that controls built-in heating, cooling and ventilation; and a solar array which is believed to be the largest community-owned rooftop PV installation in the UK.

Recent productions filmed at the Bottle Yard include Rivals for Disney+, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light for the BBC) and The Road Trip for Paramount+.

The council’s head of film, Laura Aviles, said: “We are extremely proud that The Bottle Yard’s TBY2 facility is the highest performer in this year’s Studio Sustainability Standard and equally delighted that our main site has shown such significant improvement too.

“As a dual-site complex, The Bottle Yard Studios accommodates productions working at a range of budgets with differing needs but our commitment to sustainability is consistent across our entire operation.”

Aviles said the studios’ operational team “makes every effort to help productions work more sustainably with a particular focus on supporting a circular economy here in Bristol”.

But despite the success of the Bottle Yard, Bristol City Council have been looking to sell the studios.

In September, the council announced that “owing to changes in the TV and film production market and the ownership and investment models of local authority-owned studios elsewhere, councillors… are being asked to agree to a process to identify a purchaser for the Studios to maximise future investment opportunities”.
