Bond bit the dust after three weeks at the top as Denis Villeneuve’s bash at Dune comfortably topped the chart. No Time To Die could still reach £100m, though box office records now seem out of reach. Still, there’s no doubt that the film seems to have got punters back into the habit of going to the pictures. Each of this week’s top three films took more than £2m, which hasn’t happened since before the first lockdown. Dune stands a good chance of eclipsing Blade Runner 2049 to become Villeneuve’s first £20m earner at the UK box office, while Venom: Let There Be Carnage seems likely to match the earnings of its pre-Covid predecessor. Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch is the big arthouse crossover hit of the moment, though it’s proving less popular so far than The Grand Budapest Hotel. There was comparatively little interest in the latest failed attempt to do away with Michael Myers, Halloween Kills, while treacly musical Dear Evan Hansen was the weekend’s big flop.
