‘Bond Smashes Box Office Record’ screamed the headlines. Which was kind of true. No Time To Die enjoyed the widest UK theatrical release of any film in UK history, opening in 772 cinemas. But that record would stand even if nobody turned up. That said, the film’s franchise-best four-day opening ‘weekend’ haul of nearly £26m was still enormously impressive, while trailing the £29.4m of Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The cinema industry promptly breathed a huge sigh of relief at conclusive evidence that audiences are still happy to flock to cinemas if the films are worth seeing. Indeed, No Time To Die took just three days to trample Peter Rabbit 2, becoming the biggest pandemic-era release. Whether Daniel Craig’s final outing as Bond stands any chance of eclipsing its two predecessors in terms of total global box office haul remains to be seen however, as many cinemas remain closed and the film has yet to open in China. The record to beat is Skyfall‘s $1.1 billion. Since 94% of all cinema tickets sold over the weekend were for the Bond flick, the rest of the chart seems rather irrelevant, with only Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings taking more than £500,000.
