The Grinch dethroned Freddie to end Queen’s two-week reign at the top. The new animation now ranks as the biggest opening Grinch flick at the UK office and Universal’s second-biggest opener of the year, after Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. But the Bohemian Rhapsodists continue to hold up well, enduring a slimmer fall in takings than the Abba warblers suffered in their third week on release. That said, Bohemian Rhapsody is unlikely to catch the Mamma Mia! sequel, despite pulling strongly ahead of music-oriented rival A Star Is Born. Buoyed by wildly enthusiastic reviews, Steve McQueen’s Widows opened strongly in third place, while D-Day horror Overlord did reasonably well while failing to penetrate the top five. Interestingly, just outside the top ten, Peter Jackson’s superb They Shall Not Grow Old took more than a quarter of a million quid in cinemas despite being broadcast by the BBC on Armistice Day. If you prefer to watch this one on the big screen, it’s still on in cinemas locally. Check our comprehensive film listings for details.
