Musicals enthusiasts have been out in force this week, annoying the hell out of one another as they bellow along to Wicked. This has set a record by notching up the biggest opening of 2024. That £13.7m haul also means Wicked enjoyed the best opening weekend of any stage-to-screen musical adaptation, eclipsing previous record holder Les Misérables. But in the all-time musicals chart, it’s had to settle for third place behind Beauty and the Beast and Frozen 2. Other films were available over the weekend, but only Gladiator II and Paddington in Peru took more than £1m. Venom: The Last Dance, meanwhile, slipped to tenth place in what was probably its last week in the chart.
