Seriously crappy Easter weather filled cinema managers’ hearts with joy as punters flocked in search of shelter and warmth. Peter Rabbit was the chief beneficiary, enjoying a third week at the top with a 21% boost in takings and keeping Spielberg’s Ready Player One at bay. Remarkably, the floppy-eared animated vermin have now overtaken Hotel Transylvania 2 to become Sony Pictures Animation’s biggest hit at the UK box office. The film has also leapfrogged far superior animated fare, such as Coco and Early Man. The Spielberg flick’s £5.1m opening weekend is creditable enough, putting it just behind The BFG but well ahead of his more serious flicks like The Post. Wes Anderson enjoyed his biggest ever UK opening weekend with his well-received Isle of Dogs, which comfortably eclipsed The Grand Budapest Hotel. But not every film benefited from the grotty weather. Pacific Rim: Uprising tumbled from second to seventh place and the latest ‘sick lit’ adaptation, Midnight Sun, failed to chart. Perhaps audiences are tiring of glossy romantic suffering. Let’s hope so, eh?
