In theory, bad weather is great news for the cinema industry. But this rather assumes that punters can actually get out of their homes. So the weekend box office struggled against the Beast from the East (or, as that amusing Finnish meme put it, ‘Tuesday’). That didn’t stop Black Panther holding off the challenge from Red Sparrow. With a strong tail wind, it might yet eclipse Marvel Avengers Assemble to become the highest-grossing Marvel flick. But don’t bet on it. The Greatest Showman is finally beginning to flag, but still took more than the second highest new entry, Game Night, and shows no sign of collapsing as rapidly as Fifty Shades Freed, which fell out of the chart from fourth place last week. Lady Bird continues to hold up well, while The Shape of Water can look forward to a post-Oscars boost next week. Nick Park’s Early Man finally exited the top ten, but not before enriching Aardman and Studiocanal to the tune of £10m, putting the hand-crafted plucky Brits ahead of such machine-tooled Hollywood juggernauts as Ferdinand and The Lego Ninjago Movie.
