No surprises as A Quiet Place II grabbed the top spot, but those who were predicting the death of cinema a few weeks ago may wish to reflect on the fact that the sequel’s opening weekend take exceeded that of the first film back in pre-pandemic 2018. That’s despite all those social distancing restrictions and Irish cinemas still being closed over the weekend (they finally reopened on Monday). Peter Rabbit 2 is holding steady in second place, hauling in the same amount of loot as it did last week, and is now up to £12m. Not everything is doing quite so well. The public appetite for post-pandemic boilerplate feelgoodery seems to have been overestimated, as Dream Horse took just £200,000 nationwide. That’s a fifth of the earnings of franchise horror The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It in its second week on release. At the foot of the chart, global anime hit Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is up to £1m – an impressive result for such a niche release.
