It might have been the hottest weekend of the year so far, but nothing could stop punters flocking to Toy Story 4, which continued to do a roaring trade in the nation’s air-conditioned multiplexes. Woody, Buzz and Forky also comfortably saw off the challenge from the latest Richard Curtis romcom. Yesterday is largely critic-proof, which is probably just as well given the stinky reviews, and is actually doing reasonably well by Curtis standards. But it seems unlikely to catch such music-themed hits as Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman.
How come Avengers: Endgame is back in the top ten after 10 weeks on release? Well, rapacious Disney chose to ‘re-release’ the film (even though it hadn’t actually left cinemas) with an exciting eight – count ’em! – minutes of ‘bonus footage’, which worked like catnip on members of the nerd community. Elsewhere, classy documentaries contiue to pack in discerning punters. Diego Maradona just overtook Amazing Grace to become the year’s biggest documentary hit, but its reign is likely to be short-lived given the justified popularity of Apollo 11.
