Summer blockbusters often behave like those terrible ‘firework indie’ bands. Fickle punters flock to them over their opening weekends and then promptly move on to the next big shiny fashionable thing, leaving them to drop down the chart like a stone. Not so Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. Probably because it’s pulling a much wider audience than teenage comicbook enthusiasts, the WWII flick dropped just 20% from its enormous opening during its second weekend on release and is now hurtling towards the £30m mark. Jolly kids’ cartoon Captain Underpants had to settle for second place, it’s £2.5m opening being a tad low by DreamWorks standards – especially as this includes four days of previews. Overall, it was a bumper weekend at the UK box office thanks to the inclement weather, with each of the top seven films taking more than £1m. So while The Big Sick could only claim tenth place despite all those positive reviews, it’s actually doing rather well. This one should continue to benefit from being the only romantic comedy in cinemas when its release is expanded on Friday. Locally, it’ll be adding the Cineworld Hengrove to its tally.
