Hear that noise? That’s the sound of the nation’s cinema managers breathing an enormous sigh of relief after the hordes flocked back to cinemas over a particularly shitty weekend. Mission: Impossible – Fallout enjoyed a franchise-best three-day opening. But the challenge from Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again in its second week on release was so strong that Tom Cruise and chums only topped the charts by a whisker. The Abba jukebox musical sequel is now well on its way to becoming one of the year’s biggest films. Nippers’ good taste (and possibly that of adults) meant that Incredibles 2 beat off the animated challenge from Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation, sailing through the £30m barrier after just three weeks. Further down the chart, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom finally topped £40m after eight weeks on release. In fifth place, bouffant-haired King of the Waltz Andre Rieu scored his best ever UK box office result – and highest chart placing – with his 2018 concert broadcast. Putting this into perspective, its incredible £1.48m haul from just the one screening is 30% more than popsters Take That achieved with their 2017 live O2 show broadcast, proving, once again, that one should never underestimate the power of the grey pound. Its coffers will be further boosted by encore screenings this Sunday. Arthouse cinema is also doing well. Outside the chart, Apostasy is packing ’em in on just 30 screens nationwide. If you haven’t caught this one yet, the Watershed has just announced a further run of screenings from Friday. See our comprehensive film listings for details.
