UK box office takings crept slowly upwards over the weekend, but they have a very long way to go before they reach pre-lockdown levels. Pixar’s Onward continues to dominate, but the reissue of the extended version of Peter Jackson’s The Fellowship of the Ring was the highest ‘new’ entry at number five. The only genuinely new release to make the chart was Stage Mother, with rather less than £20,000. Under normal circumstances, this would have been deemed pitiful. On the other hand, the first post-lockdown release, Black Water: Abyss, has yet to reach £100,000 after three weeks on release. Things should perk up this weekend with the release of the first major new movie since March: the Russell Crowe road rage thriller Unhinged. Locally, the Everyman becomes the latest local cinema to welcome back punters when it opens its doors on Friday.
