It’s like the sun never came out. Or, perhaps, the novelty has simply worn off. For the second week running, a big new release has taken nearly £10m at the UK box office during its opening weekend. Last week, it was The Incredibles 2, which continues to do a roaring trade and is on course to beocme Pixar’s biggest ever box office hit internationally. Musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again enjoyed an opening nearly 50% bigger the first film, which was released a decade ago, though it remains to be seen whether it has the staying power to match the first Mamma Mia!’s £68.6m haul. Not everything is doing well, mind. Given the mediocre reviews and lack of public interest in Hotel Artemis, Jodie Foster could be forgiven for wondering why she bothered to make a comeback to the big screen.
