Still the clear winner of the public vote among the current crop of awards season releases, 1917 held up strongly over its second weekend on release. If Sam Mendes’ WWI flick can beat off the challenge from The Personal History of David Copperfield, it should dominate the box office chart over several more weeks as the gongs start to pour in. Also holding up very well, despite its comparative lack of nominations, is the current iteration of Little Women, whose takings have already overtaken those of last year’s The Favourite. At a time when franchises are faltering (blink and you’d have missed the latest Charlie’s Angels), Bad Boys For Life defied expectations to enjoy the biggest opening of any film in the series, despite the 17 year gap between episodes. Expect to see Bad Boys in the Old Folks Home before too long. Further down the chart, Star Wars: The Rose of Skywalker suffered a sharp fall in its fifth weekend on release, though it has now leapfrogged The Phantom Menace to become the UK’s 25th highest grossing film. Just outside the top ten, Makoto Shinkai’s niche anime Weathering With You notched up an impressive £221,320 opening weekend – nearly ten times that of the director’s previous film, Your Name. It’s now being rewarded with a much-expanded release. Check our comprehensive film listings for full details on where to see this one and everything else.
