Everybody went Christmas shopping and only kiddies (along with long-suffering parents) went to the cinema. That seems to be the message from what was a pretty quiet weekend, during which the big new releases struggled to make any headway. Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 clung on at the top, while The Grinch climbed a couple of places in its fifth week on release, taking advantage of Creed II‘s 43% drop. The thumping gents are still ahead of the first Creed movie, so Warners won’t be too disappointed. Bohemian Rhapsody remains the highest earning film on the chart, enjoying its seventh week in the top five as it races towards the £44m mark. The Old Man and the Gun was the most successful new release, but had to settle for seventh place, just ahead of the well-received Sorry to Bother You. Meanwhile, the encore screenings of the Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker were sufficiently popular to earn a place in the top ten, bringing its total above £1m. Of course, it’s worth pointing out that Mortal Engines and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse both enjoyed extensive previews (six days and four days respectively) ahead of their official openings on Friday. All that preview loot will simply be rolled up, so we can expect much crowing about their bumper opening nine and seven day  ‘weekends’.
