If you formed the impression that Mary Poppins Returns was inescapable over the festive holiday, you weren’t wrong. Disney’s saturation release was the widest ever mounted in the UK, unleashing the supernatural nanny in 740 cinemas. Unsurprisingly, this belated sequel cleaned up, with takings of £23m in just two weeks. Ms. Poppins helped fuel a bumper post-Christmas weekend at the UK box office as everyone fled their families to seek refuge in the nearest cinema. The first film in the Transformers franchise ever to get good reviews, prequel Bumblebee landed in second place. Its main Boxing Day competitor, the spoof Holmes & Watson, failed to dislodge Aquaman, but still did pretty well with a £1.4m opening weekend. After ten weeks on release, Bohemian Rhapsody held steady in eighth place as the longest-serving and highest-grossing film in the top ten. Fat Bottomed Girls, Killer Queens and Good Old Fashioned Lover Boys alike will no doubt be overjoyed to learn that it’s about to follow Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and The Greatest Showman by being released in a singalong version. See our comprehensive film listings for details.
