Star Wars: The Last Jedi romps through the £50m barrier to become the third biggest film of 2017 (behind Beauty and the Beast and Dunkirk) after just two weeks on release. But what’s alarming the bean counters is the film’s massive drop in takings, especially in the US, after that record-breaking opening weekend. According to analysis by Forbes, it “lost more money between its first and second weekends than any film ever, by a lot”. In the UK, The Last Jedi is tracking £15m behind The Force Awakens, which had amassed £65m after its second weekend on release exactly two years ago. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle emerged as the winner in the battle of the new releases, though the contest was pretty meaningless since so many preview screenings have been amalgamated into the opening ‘weekend’ figures. For real evidence of staying power, you have to look further down the chart, where Paddington 2 continues to take more than £1m after seven weeks on release. It’s a Wonderful Life made its annual appearance too, before going into hibernation for another year.
